Wiesenthal Center Urges Belarus Authorities to Preserve Holocaust Mass Grave

Jerusalem – The Simon Wiesenthal Center today called upon the Belarus authorities to halt a building project for luxury apartments in the city of Brest (Brisk), in the wake of the discovery of a mass grave of Holocaust victims on the site. In a letter sent today to the Belarus ambassador in Israel Vladimir Skvortsov, the Center’s director for Eastern European Affairs Dr. Efraim Zuroff expressed the Center’s grave concerns regarding the future of the mass grave.

According to Zuroff:

“We firmly believe that the mass murder sites of the Holocaust should not be tampered with, and should remain the final resting places of the victims and places of commemoration, memory, and mourning. In this matter, respecting and honoring the fate of the victims should take precedence over any financial considerations.

“We kindly request that you convey to the authorities in Minsk and in Brest the concerns of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, an international Jewish defense organization with 400,000 member families.”
