Jerusalem – The Simon Wiesenthal Center today denounced the vandalization with swastikas of a Holocaust memorial monument in Bogdanovka, one of the worst mass murder sites in Ukraine, where over 40,000 Jews were murdered by Romanian soldiers, Ukrainian police and civilians and ethnic Germans. In a statement issued here today by its Director for Eastern European Affairs, Holocaust historian Dr. Efraim Zuroff, the Center also noted the threats directed against three Jewish personages, Ukrainian President Zelensky, Jewish community activist Eduard Dolinsky, and former minister Evgeny Chervonenko, currently a TV presenter.
According to Zuroff:
“The frequent vandalizations of Holocaust memorials in Ukraine are a direct result of the failure of the Ukrainian authorities to criminalize anti-Semitic incidents. As long as the perpetrators of such disgusting, offensive actions cannot be punished, these attacks will continue and increase. We urge the Ukrainian authorities to expedite the passage of specific legislation to outlaw anti-Semitism and all other forms of racial hatred and xenophobia.”
