Wiesenthal Center calls on Austria to offer reward for Nazi war crimes fugitive

VIENNA, Austria - The Simon Wiesenthal Center demanded Thursday that Austria offer a reward for the arrest of a Nazi war crimes fugitive who has been on the run for decades.

German authorities have charged Aribert Heim, 91, with killing hundreds of concentration camp victims in Germany and Austria using lethal injection during World War II. He has been at large since the charges were brought in 1962.

Germany has offered a reward of $159,000 for his arrest. The human rights
organization argued in a statement that Austria should do the same.

The demand comes only weeks after the center insisted that Austria find a way to strip Heim of his academic title.

The center wants him stripped of a doctor's title he received in 1940 from the University of Vienna. But the university has said it cannot revoke the title because there is no law that allows for such action.

Heim has never been allowed to practice medicine in Austria because he did not finish his medical training here. (By The Associated Press) more...

Dr. Zuroff has provided the Austrian authorities with a list of 47 men who served in SS battalions stationed in Salzburg and Vienna and were sent to France, Italy, Russia, and Poland, where they were involved in atrocities against Jews. The Austrian news magazine Profil has already tracked down three of the 47 men on the list. A feature story about Dr. Zuroff's campaign, known as "Operation Last Chance," was published in the latest issue of the Jerusalem Report (dated November 3).
