German prosecutors charge alleged Auschwitz guard, 93, with being accessory to murder

BERLIN –  German prosecutors say they have charged a 93-year-old man deported from the U.S. for lying about his Nazi past with being an accessory to murder for allegedly serving as an Auschwitz death camp guard.

Stuttgart prosecutors said Thursday they filed the charges at a court in the southwestern town of Ellwangen.

The suspect, Hans Lipschis, was taken into custody in May. His lawyer wasn't immediately reachable for comment.

He was charged in connection with the arrival and killing of several thousand prisoners during his alleged time as an Auschwitz guard between October 1941 and September 1943.

Lipschis has acknowledged being assigned to an SS guard unit at Auschwitz, but maintains he only served as a cook and wasn't involved in any war crimes.
