The family of accused war criminal Charles Zentai are hoping
to have the 88-year-old home by Christmas after his lawyers
revealed they would today lodge yet another appeal over
his looming extradition.
Denis Barich, of Fiocco’s Lawyers, said Mr Zentai would apply for bail as soon
as an application for a judicial review of the Federal Government’s
decision to approve his extradition was lodged today.
Mr Zentai has spent more than six
weeks behind bars after deciding against appealing a Full
Federal Court decision approving his extradition to Hungary.
He had instead pinned his hopes on
Home Affairs Minister Brendan O’Connor overturning the decision,
but he too refused.
Mr Zentai is accused of murdering
a Jewish teenager in Budapest in 1944.
Mr Barich said the bail application
could be heard within the next few weeks.
He said Mr Zentai was holding up “reasonably
well” but was desperate to be home by Christmas.
“The intention is for Mr Zentai to
be home by Christmas so that during the review process he
doesn’t just have to sit in custody,” he said.
“This could take a few months obviously
and I think it would be quite inappropriate that he have
to spend that time in custody considering that he hasn’t
been charged or there is no formal indictment.”
