Alleged
nazi war criminal in court
PERTH
MICHAEL BENNETT |
Lawyers for alleged nazi war criminal Charles Zentai was
tonight given a month to provide medical documents declaring
that he should not be jailed while waiting for a final
decision on his extradition to Hungary on charges of murdering
a Jewish teenager in Budapest in 1944.
Last week a Federal Court judge dismissed yesterday the 87-year-old’s appeal
against an earlier decision that allowed his possible extradition
to proceed.
Mr Zentai challenged the ruling of
Magistrate Barbara Lane in August that he could be subject
to a Federal Government decision on his extradition.
Justice John Gilmour upheld Ms Lane’s
decision, saying that Mr Zentai was a person eligible for
surrender in relation to the extradition offence and found
the charge against him was for a war crime.
After last week giving Mr Zentai seven
days to prove his ill health, Justice Gilmour tonight extended
the period in order for the elderly man to finalise medical
tests.
He will reappear in the Federal Court
on May 11.
