War
crimes suspect questioned in Budapest
By: Hungary Around the Clock |
The Budapest Investigative Prosecutor's Office on Monday
questioned Sándor Képíró as a war crime suspect relating
to an incident in 1943.
Evidence indicates that a patrol led
by Képíró on January 23, 1943, killed four civilians at Novi
Sad, during a three-day spree in which Hungarian soldiers
killed hundreds of civilians. Képíró, 95, denies the charge.
The prosecutor's request that Képíró
be placed under house arrest was rejected by the Buda Central
District Court.
Képíró fled to Argentina after he
was convicted of war crimes by a Hungarian court in 1946.
He returned to Hungary in 1996.
