War crimes suspect loses appeal

The 88-year-old war crimes suspect Károly Zentai could be extradited to Hungary in the very near future after an Australian court declined his appeal.

Zentai is accused of beating a Jewish teenager to death for not wearing a yellow star in 1944. Only the Australian Supreme Court or justice minister now stand in the way of Zentai’s transportation to Hungary. The alleged war criminal’s son told a local paper that the family will likely opt for the second route, as their legal costs have already been enormous. Zentai has been fighting his extradition since Hungary requested it in 2005. Jewish Nazi hunter organisation the Simon Wiesenthal Center has been key in the pursuit of Zentai, and Efraim Zuroff, director of its Jerusalem office, said he was extremely pleased to have seen the impediment to his extradition removed.
