Charles Zentai, a Perth man wanted for questioning over a
Holocaust-related war crime, has asked the Federal Court
to formally declare him a free man.
Mr Zentai has spent the past six years fighting a request from the Hungarian
government for him to face
questioning over the death
of a Jewish teenager in 1944.
The
Federal Government approved
his extradition but the Federal
Court recently overturned that
decision.
The
89-year-old has been on bail
since December and today the
Federal Court was told he would
remain on bail unless the court
clarified his status and quashed
his extradition order.
His
son Ernie Steiner says his
father wants just wants to
move on.
"It'll
be great to have those statements
and declarations but there's
been no indication from Hungary,
no indication from the Commonwealth
about whether they'll appeal," he said.
The
Federal Government can still
appeal against the Federal
Court decision.
Mr
Zentai has spent more than
$200,000 fighting the case
and was imprisoned for two
months before his appeal was
heard.
Mr
Steiner says his father will
not be seeking compensation.
"Even
though he has been wrongfully
imprisoned and wrongfully arrested,
my father just wants to get
on with his life and live his
last few years in peace," he said.
Justice
Neil McKerracher has reserved
his decision.
