Yesterday evening (July 11, 2002) Latvian TV-1 news program "Panorama" reported about Zuroff’s press conference in Riga.
" Panorama" emphasized that, although Zuroff said that dozens of untried Nazi war criminals
still live in Latvia, he wasn't able to name concretely any
of them. "P" reported also that Zuroff announced premiums of 10 000 USD for those, who would
provide information about the war criminals.
" P" informed that, however, not all the Jews residing in Latvia, support activities
of the S.Wiesenthal Center. A Latvian Jew, journalist Ilja
Dimensteins told "P", "It reminds me hunting of witches". His relatives were shot in Rujiena and he can't forgive it to murderers, however,
he admitted that Zuroff’s pursuit for revenge, when there
are no almost anyone alive criminal, testifies about attempts
to justify existence of the foundation and to attract sponsors.
Zuroff affirmed that he would cooperate with the Latvian
Government, appealing to it to co-finance the premiums and
to take responsibility for the further formation of the possible
evidences.
Latvian PM Press Secretary Amis Lapins told "P" that the Government didn't receive any official appeal and that "In case there are any untried Nazi war criminals in Latvia, the State of Latvia
itself is able to try them and there is no need for interference
