What We Talk About When We Talk About Stepan Bandera: A Rejoinder to Dovid Katz |
Dovid Katz has had a long and distinguished career in reestablishing Jewish learning and Yiddishkeit in Lithuania and in fighting Shoah revisionism and denial across Eastern Europe. He deserves ample credit for both, so it is especially disappointing when he adopts, in his response to my article, the position that his—and our—enemies are his friends. “In other words,” he writes, “when it comes to the basic ethical issue of how we think about the Nazis and their local reliable killers, the bad guys are the good guys and the good guys are the bad guys.” Vladimir Putin, his allies in the Baltic states, and the eastern Ukrainian separatists are the “the good guys” in their rejection of an anti-Semitic Nazi collaborationist past, while the Ukrainian nationalists are “the bad guys.”more...

The blog Christine Beresniova and Rokas Beresniovas recently published the article “A lamentable absence of sexy scandals.” We will refrain from comment on their understanding of the concept “sexy scandals” and stick to the work of fellow human rights advocates, which entails standing up to powerful establishments on behalf of minorities, victims of prejudice, and in the case of Eastern Europe, the victims (and handful of survivors) of genocide. Dr.Efraim

The
visit to Israel this past week of Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius
Kubilius went virtually unnoticed by the Israeli media. In fact,
the report by David Lev on Friday on Israel National News ("Is Lithuania Sincere About Owing Up to its Holocaust Past?") was, to the best of my knowledge, the only attempt to assess the most important
aspect of current Lithuanian-Jewish relations, the attitude of
the Baltic republic to its bloody Holocaust past and the extensive
complicity of Lithuanians in the mass murder of hundreds of thousands
of Jews (both in their own country and outside her borders),
in the light of recent attempts by Lithuania and its Baltic neighbors
to rewrite the history of the Shoa [Holocaust, ed.] in a totally
distorted manner. more...

resignation late last week of historian Petras Stankeras from
his post as a "senior specialist" at the Lithuanian ministry of the interior received little attention in the
US, but the scandal that prompted his decision to give up his
job should set off a red warning light in Washington, and especially
in the state department and the US embassy in Vilnius. more...

No
one wants to live surrounded by death. It's understandable that

Seventy

For five decades the Lithuanian nation suffered the lot of the

Shameful
truth must be told |
Wayne
Stringer has done New Zealand a service. The former policeman
has shown there was good evidence that Nazi war criminals came
to New Zealand after the war. He has scotched the myth that
the Simon Wiesenthal Centre's list of suspected war criminals
was vacuous and the inquiry a waste of time and money. There
was serious evidence that Jonas Pukas - a Lithuanian who settled
in New Zealand after the war - was involved in massacres of
Jews. At least one other man appears to have served in the
Latvian equivalent of the murder squad to which Pukas belonged.
Stringer has set the historical record straight. We now know
what the evidence was - and it is deeply disturbing. more... |

Notes: Calls from God and Prosecutors
Saulius Salterns |
In
addition to the lottery Pot of Gold, Lithuania was now offered
another award - USD 10 thousand for betraying persons who might
have participated in holocaust and genocide of Jews. The Lithuanian
Government was also encouraged by Efraim Zuroff to contribute
to the private initiative and start the fever of hunting for
Jews' killers. And what would happen if Lithuanians eager to
receive some money would recognize Efraim Zuroff, director
of S. Wiesenthal Centre, as a severe supporter of anti-Semitism
and conductor of genocide? The Lithuanian Premier A. Brazauskas
thanked for the offer politely on TV and refused to allocate
state money for the "hunt". A young Lithuanian expert of political science regretted that the award allocated
by the Jewish centre might bring the relations of Lithuanian
and Jews to a low and sad level, instigating mutual alienation
and disagreement.
The author of the article compares the initiative announced by S. Wiesenthal
Centre to the hunting for bears in Labanoras forest and shooting extinct
lions in Sahara. |
