Croatian amateur Nazi hunter asks Zagreb to name street after Simon Wiesenthal

Zagreb (AP): A Croatian amateur Nazi hunter has asked Zagreb municipal authorities to name a street after Simon Wiesenthal, who devoted his life to bringing Nazi-era criminals to justice, a newspaper reported Friday.

Wiesenthal died Tuesday in his sleep at his home in Vienna , Austria , at the age of 96 and he was laid to rest in Israel on Friday. A Holocaust survivor, Wiesenthal helped bring about 1,100 World War II criminals to justice in his more than half-century-long quest.

«Wiesenthal certainly deserves to get a street,» Alen Budaj was quoted as saying by the Novi list daily. «We all owe it to him.» There was no immediate answer to Budajs request from Zagreb City Halls commission in charge of naming streets. Two years ago, Budaj stumbled upon a 92-year-old Croat man suspected of Nazi-era crimes when researching his family history. His finding that the man - a regional police chief during the countrys World War II Nazi puppet regime - was living in Croatia, triggered local prosecution and prompted the man to flee the country. Budajs tip earned him a US$5,000 ($3,800) reward from the Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal Center. more...

"The case of Ašner is being solved too slowly"
By Kazimir Balog (translated from Croatian)
Požega – Efraim Zuroff, director of Simon Wiesenthal Center, is disappointed with the slowness of the case of Milivoj Ašner because the Croatian judiciary, even a year after the request for a criminal investigation was submitted against the former Ustasha chief of police, he has neither been indicted him nor has Croatia requested his extradition. Zuroff said this during his visit to Požega, where he also spoke with Mayor Zdravko Ronko about the devastated Jewish cemetery in Požega and about placing memorial plaques where three synagogues used to stand. Apart from criticizing the host for insufficient condemnation of Ašner's crimes, Zuroff emphasized that the problem of other post-Communist countries is to honestly look back at their history and acknowledge the crimes of the Holocaust.
“Perpetrators should be prosecuted while it is still possible to do so. Ašner is already quite old and every day that he is not brought to trial he gets one day closer to eluding punishment. The final test is the results because a year has passed and there is still no request for Ašner's extradition”, says Zuroff who visited Požega with Alen Budaj, the youngster who revealed Ašner.
